Batube lost both parents at the age of seven. His father died from a hernia and his mother had malaria. His grandfather takes care of him, but he is now too old and almost blind, therefore cannot earn any living to support him. Interestingly, his grandfather is also the chief of the village, a huge honor, but is an unpaid position. Before he was sponsored, he spent most of his time farming trying to earn money to pay his school fees. He attended school so inconsistently, that real learning was unable to take place. Now Batube shares, "A Better Life for Kids has given me opportunities to learn and make a future for myself. My best subject is math and science. I want to do something with my life in the future. Now that is possible. Thank you for your support."
